According to a recent Yoga Alliance and Yoga Journal report on Yoga in America, 38% of people practicing yoga (or starting their practice!), are 55 and older. The number of Americans practicing yoga has nearly doubled in the last four years. The senior population in America is expected to rise to over 80 million souls by 2050. If you are a yoga teacher, teaching adult classes, you will be asked to meet the particular needs of this enthusiastic population of students, but you may find yourself unsure about just what to teach.

In Yoga with Seniors we will address common physical issues that will need accommodation in your class, for example: osteoporosis, arthritis, COPD or CAD. Learning to create skillful modifications for older students, some coming to yoga for the first time, will grow your ability to offer the gifts of yoga with confidence. Adapting to the needs in the room will allow for a strong, challenging, but equally relaxed and meditative practice.

This 4-week, 30-hour course certifies yoga teachers and others to lead Yoga with Seniors in group and individual sessions. Each week participants will receive video of a senior-appropriate asana, pranayama and meditation class (one for each week of the course). Additional video recording materials include over three hours of material with Physical Therapists on Range of Motion and skillful adaptations; a video lecture of Yogic Philosophy on the 4 Ashramas of Life, with a focus on Vanaprashtha; presentations challenging fear-based expectations of end of life with life-affirming stories; participants will also receive three plus hours of recorded materials on technical aspects of offering classes to the elder population. One weekly recorded Q & A session is offered as well, in which participants can ask questions beforehand that instructors will address in a recorded session.

This course is ideal for yoga teachers looking to develop their teaching to meet the needs of a growing segment of the yoga population, or seasoned yoga practitioners who work with this demographic in some other capacity, such as nurses or home health care workers. Upon completion of the course graduates will receive a certificate of completion and can register the hours with Yoga Alliance for 30 CEs.

  • 1 Sadhana (1 pre-recorded video) per week for 4 weeks: includes an asana, pranayama and meditation practice (75-90 min/week)

1 Yoga with Seniors guest lecture (pre-recorded) per week for 4 weeks (approximately 90 min/week)

1 Yoga with Seniors Technique Video (pre-recorded) per week for 4 weeks (approximately 90 min/week)

There are also usually 2 homework assignments each week, including written prompts in response to the videos and Yoga with Seniors practice teaching. This course also includes interaction other course participants on an online forum.

The instructors are available throughout the course to answer questions online and offer weekly recorded Q&A sessions in response to participants questions each week.

Allot about 7-8 hours/week for completion of all course material.
